Gary McGintySavannah Country Day's Gary McGinty is our boys' player of the week. "Everything I've got is from working hard," said McGinty. "Not a lot of natural talent but basketball is what I love to do and I work at it and get better every day."
"He's been a very unselfish player for us but most important he has been a great asset to the entire student body as a student athlete here at Country Day," said basketball coach Mike Harner.
Last week against Savannah Christian and Islands High, McGinty averaged 31 points and 10 rebounds. "You've heard the name Gary McGinty, he can shoot the basketball but it's the other parts of his game I've been most pleased with, rebounding the basketball for us," said Harner. "Just being a team leader for us, working as hard as he can in practice and just over all, his knowledge of the game and he's a great teammate. That's the best thing about him."
When you came out, everything was going in. What was it about that night that everything was clicking. "I think it was just teammates kicking me the ball, giving me the opportunity to come out shooting. They just went in, bent my knees and hit the shot."
Harner added, "He's got textbook form, perfect follow through. He's on balance and he's ready to catch it and shoot it."
Saturday against Islands, McGinty ended the first quarter by hitting a halfcourt shot for his 4th three pointer of the quarter. "Fortunately, we were standing right behind it from our bench," said Harner. "As soon as he released it, it looked good and every time Gary shoots anything it's going in, even if it's from half court. And when it went through and hung the net, the crowd went crazy. It was exciting to see that shot go in." McGinty added, "It was just a heave, push and pray. I didn't know it was going in until the stands went crazy. I didn't know. Felt good, though."
And the good news for the Hornets, McGinty is just a junior. "That's the best part about it, we get him for another year," said Harner.
