SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

You've probably seen them at the grocery store or your local pharmacy. Pre-paid debit cards are a new hit with consumers, as more and more people are looking for ways to avoid hidden banking fees.

More than 15 million Americans are "unbanked," a term the government uses to describe those who have no banking account whatsoever.

Pre-paid debit cards, which are often used as gifts, are now becoming extremely popular.

Alex Matjanec, co-founder of MyBankTracker.com, says "In 2011, 409 billion dollars was uploaded on prepaid debit cards. It was actually the fastest growing transaction method with 35 percent growth ."

But there are a few things to look out for when using these pre-paid debit cards. These cards can also have hidden fees such as a monthly service fee, ATM fee, and a fee for every time you reload.

Experts urge consumers to always read the fine print, and there's even a few websites you can visit to help decide which card suits you best:
