Christians in Savannah celebrate Ash Wednesday

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Christians around the world are celebrating Ash Wednesday. The holiday marks the first day of Lent, a 40 day period when most Christians give something up to observe the holiday.

In Savannah, folks packed St. John the Baptist for Ash Wednesday to give penance and kick off the Lenten season. The holy day is also the period many Christians use to prepare for Easter, which comes at the end of Lent. While many people pick something to give up, some are using Lent to start good habits.

"I'm actually setting time for self reflection. I don't think it is always about giving up something bad but starting a good habit," said Heather Byrd, Savannah.

Lent lasts for 40 days.
