Guardsmen head to Afghanistan to teach farming

METTER, GA (WTOC) -

Dozens of Georgia guardsmen proudly marched into Metter High School's gym in front of families one last time before they leave home. Members of the 265th Regional Support Group, headquartered in Metter, will spend a year in Afghanistan.

"It was a little overwhelming at first but I'm excited about it. It will be a good experience for me," confided Spc. Bianca English.

The men and women of the group have spent a year training and studying for their unique peace-keeping role.

"I'll have 10 to 12 Ag Specialists who'll go out every day. They will work with villagers on how to grow crops better, help them with such things as cool storage," explained Col. Craig McGalliard, the group's commander.

McGalliard said this mission epitomizes "counter-insurgency" and one of the best ways to the hearts and minds of the Afghan people is to show them better ways to feed their family.

"Water is a big issue for them. They get very little rainfall. Most of their water comes from snow melt. Anything we can do to help with retention ponds, dams things like that will help them grow more crops," the colonel noted.

One of their instructors over the past year knows the task all too well. Bulloch County extension agent Wes Harris spent a year in Afghanistan working with the farmers.

"They're in for the challenge of their lives. This is a very poor country. Food security is a serious issue," said Harris.

But commanders and citizen soldiers alike said, if they can help give a country another option besides terrorism, it helps protect the people they must leave back at home.
