HHI Chamber officials weigh in on rising gas prices

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

What kind of impact will the increase in gas prices have on tourism on Hilton Head Island?

Nearly 80 percent of the visitors who come to Hilton Head Island each year drive to the island. The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce says typically, even with the rising gas prices, it doesn't stop people from coming to the island.

However, they say it could impact how much they spend during their visit.

"They're still coming but when they arrive they might be spending a little bit less," said Charlie Clark, Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. "They may be eating out two nights versus three nights or scaling back on a round of golf or two. That's where the impact really comes in. Historically, overall it hasn't been a huge impact on us as a destination."

While gas prices go up every year during the tourism season, the Chamber says gas prices are expected to soar to new levels this year.
