Breathe Easy rally for smoke-free Chatham County

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Commission is currently looking at a proposed smoking ban that would not allow people to light up in bars, restaurants, tobacco shops and private clubs in the unincorporated areas of Chatham County. Breathe Easy Savannah-Chatham held a rally at City Market today in support of the proposal.

One of the main attractions at the rally was two flash mob performances by the St. Francis Cabrini Catholic School Dance Crew.

The proposed ordinance would be similar to the smoking ban that went into affect for the city of Savannah in January of last year.

The Department of Health Behavior and Aerosol Pollution Exposure announced the indoor air quality has vastly improved at several venues that went smoke-free as a result of the ordinance.

The study, led by the Chatham County Health Department, shows a 94 percent decline in very unhealthy particle pollution levels at the businesses.

Breathe Easy Savannah-Chatham Chairperson Amy Hughes says she is optimistic the proposal will pass.
