A fire at the Wal-Mart across from Oglethorpe Mall had firefighters scrambling early today. The blaze was noticed about 3:45am this morning. The Wal-Mart employees who were in the closed store at the time say they smelled something burning, and the manager ordered everyone out after calling the Savannah Fire Department.
Savannah-Chatham police and the first fire units to arrive found flames and heavy smoke coming from the back of the store, which houses the garden department. Firefighters could also see that the blaze was being contained to that area because of the store's sprinkler system.
The garden department was heavily damaged, but the rest of the store experienced smoke and water damage. Fortunately there were no injuries.
Now firefighters are working to get the water and smoke out of the store before they can search for the cause.
