South Carolina Highway Commissioner Wants 17 Widened

Last week's accident involving two military buses carrying 100 sailors to a memorial in Beaufort may be the catalyst for improvement on US Highway 17.

South Carolina's Public Safety Department says nine people have died and 32 others have been injured on US 17 since September of 2002. State highway commissioner Bob Harrell says they must widen the 22-mile stretch of road between Jacksonboro and Gardens Corner before more people lose their lives.

It is the only part of 17 between Beaufort County and North Carolina that is not at least four lanes.
