Police: Man charged after lying about gunshot wound

A man who said he had been shot by someone had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Just before 11 p.m. Monday, Reese Kreppes, 32, walked into Memorial University Medical Center after getting shot in his thigh. He told police he had been shot in the area of Alabama and Pennsylvania streets, according to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police. Police didn't find a crime scene in that area.

The location of the injury and the presence of gunshot residue led police to believe Kreppes was not telling the truth, according to police. He later admitted he accidently shot himself, threw out the gun and drove home so he could be taken to the hospital.

Kreppes's injuries were not life-threatening. He was charged with false report of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
