Missing canoers found safe

BRYAN COUNTY, GA (WTOC) – Two canoers and their children are safe and sound after getting lost near Fort McAllister Marina State Park.

Two adults, a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old left the marina around 9 a.m. Saturday morning and were supposed to be back by 6:30 p.m., but they never showed up.

However, Tybee Island Coast Guard and the Department of Natural Resources found the boaters a few hours later.

They went out into the intercoastal water way, got turned around, got lost," said Jay Morgan from the Department of Natural Resources.

"With the tide and the current, they ended up in the Ogeechee River, right next to the camp ground. We found them all safe and sound. A little cold, but safe and sound, and a little wet."

The Coast Guard and DNR used boats and helicopters to find the missing family.
