Editorial Salute - 04/12/12

The "Joining Forces Campaign" is a White House initiative to honor individuals and organizations nationwide, who've stepped forward, in very meaningful ways, to improve the lives of our military families.  This year's competition drew over 300 applicants, from which only 20 were selected to be formally-recognized at a tribute ceremony in Washington.  Among that select few from across America, was our very own Landings Military Relief Fund.   As the name indicates, this relief fund was started when a number of very generous and caring Landings residents, under the leadership of Jack Munroe, met together with a desire to be a financial safety-net for local military families whose specific needs exceeded, both their own resources and those of the military.  These terrific, patriotic Americans began with several thousands of dollars in donations.  Since then, the fund has grown to several hundreds of thousands of dollars, thanks to the continuing generosity of founding members, and so many others who've responded to the need.

Congratulations and heartfelt thanks, on behalf of our communities and our area military units, for earning and receiving this honor earlier in the week in D.C., and to all those who continue to make the good works of the Landings Military Relief Fund possible, including the Fund's Board of Directors, led now by Lou Molella, the Fund's administrator, the American Red Cross here, led by its Executive Director Robin Wingate, and to all those who've become donors, assisting the family-needs of those who defend us. Another shining example of Coastal Georgia and South Carolina community-support for the men, women and families of our great military.
