Effingham County has approved a new plan for its countywide water and sewer system. Last night, the county board of commissioners decided only new developments would be forced to connect to the county sewer and water system. A previous resolution would have meant all homes had to join in.
Current residents say they're happy they can keep their current water supplies, but are not entirely satisfied with the county's choice for water. Which they claim is unsafe. "We are still not in favor of the water distribution in the county," said John Patterson of Springfield. "We need to be able to get water from other sources that are more suitable for human consumption."
Effingham County officials insist their water supply is safe to drink. The county uses the Savannah River and the city's industrial and domestic plant as its water source.
