Legends celebrates 10 years in Savannah

Posted: Updated:

It's an anniversary week at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort.

This is the 10th year that the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf has been played in Savannah, the longest this the event that started the Champions Tour has been in one place in its 35-year history.

And in that time, the tournament, as Savannah's identity within professional golf have both grown.

Ten years ago, the Legends was looking for a home after moving four times in the previous nine years and Savannah was looking for a premier sports event to call its own. They have flourished together, the city and the event, still making this one of the highlights of the Champions Tour Season.

"It's one we all look forward to every year,'' said Champions Tour player Jim Colbert. "Liberty Mutual and Savannah sure know how to put on a golf tournament.''

The Club at Savannah Harbor has been a good course and an even better setting for the Legends, which brings together one of the best Champions Tour fields of the year and puts them in an enjoyable team format.

But, for the players, the draw has been Savannah and how welcome they are made to feel here as well as the great support they see from the public and the local business community.

It makes the tournament feel like the major sports and social event it still is to sponsors, players and Savannah.

"This tournament was very, very successful in Austin (Texas), then it moved a couple of places where it wasn't so successful,'' said Colbert. "But as soon as we came here, it was back like Austin. You get a lot of gallery, you have a lot of fun, a lot of hospitality. It's like it's supposed to be.''

Even someone who's in town one week a year can see it's the event of the season in the Savannah golf community.

"If you don't come out this week and watch the golf tournament,'' said Colbert, "you ought to move to Charleston, because all the movers and shakers in Savannah are out here.''

The Legends will get even more Savannah flavor when the tournament begins Friday.

Local amateurs Johnny Skeadas and Bubba Victor will be playing in the Legends as non-competing markers.
