There are many joys in life. For one Cora Carter, who teaches first grade at Hodge Elementary school, helping youngsters learn is at the top of the list. Carter has been in the classroom for 20 years, teaching first graders lessons for life.

"I want to help develop a whole child," she said. "Try to apply what they learn to the real world. That's the challenge."

Carter's world has always revolved around teaching, ever since she was a student. "Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a teacher," she said. "Inspired by my third grade teacher. She was nurturing. I want to be just like that."

"She's a nice person and she's a good person," said student Jada Pinkney.

"The whole class thinks she's the best teacher," added classmate Walter Davis.

And for Kaila Williams, she told us, "I think she's a great person and you can look up to her as a role model."

"They're honest, they speak their mind, they are eager to learn and when they learn they are excited and it's good to see that," said Carter.

Cora Carter, this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
