The fate of a man convicted of killing a former Thunderbolt and Richmond Hill police officer has been decided by a Chatham County Superior Court jury. After only about an hour of deliberation yesterday, 30-year-old Joseph Williams was sentenced to die by lethal injection.
On Monday, Williams pled guilty to the strangulation death of Michael Deal, who was in the Chatham County jail for failure to pay child support and found out about Williams' plan to break out of jail. Deal's body was found hanging in his cell on July 26, 2001.
Williams' death sentence is the first in Chatham County in more than 12 years. The sentence will be automatically reviewed by the Georgia Supreme Court.
