Two people had to be taken to the hospital after an overnight hit-and-run accident in downtown Savannah. Police tell us, shortly before 1am this morning, a man driving a Ford Taurus east on Bay Street spotted a police car and immediately sped up, thinking the officer was going to pull him over.
But when the car reached the detour at East Broad, it was going so fast, the driver made the turn going the wrong way on East Broad Street. He slammed into a car with two adults and two children inside. Then the driver of the Taurus got out and ran. He was captured a few blocks away.
The two adults in the other car were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The two children were not hurt.
Police say the driver of the Taurus is charged with driving with an expired license and a variety of other traffic offenses. They're also looking for a passenger, who also ran after the accident.
