Hunting Island State Park Loses Funds

Hunting Island State Park is going back to the drawing board after losing $5 million to renourish its beaches. A Senate subcommittee voted to give the $5 million slated for the beach renourishment project back to a land conservation fund.

Park officials were hoping to use the funds to help prevent beach erosion, since they lose about 15 feet of sand each year. "Over a four-mile stretch, that's a lot of trees to lose each year, a lot of parking lots, a lot of beach access," said the park's Ray Stevens. "So, our goal is to hurry up and get funding to where we can try to preserve what we have."

Park officials are now waiting to find out if they'll get funding from the Corps of Engineers.
