If you have business with the Chatham County Board of Elections, you now have to drive to the Southside. The board moved into its new offices on Eisenhower Drive over the weekend. They are still unpacking and getting things organized, but they are open for business.
The move was necessary as part of the renovation process of the county's downtown complex.
The people who work for the board are very happy about the move. "It's going to be more convenient," said interim supervisor Diane Carver. "It's going to be easier to park. We will be by our machines at all times--our machines are in the back warehouse--so it's convenient to have the machines on the premises with us at all times."
The elections board takes care of most of the technical and ethical issues involved in an election. If you need to register or vote absentee, you still have to go to the downtown location. Within the next year the voter registrar's office will move to the Southside location.
