SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Emergency crews were called Monday morning to Heatherwood Drive at Shamrock Circle on Savannah's south side after construction crews hit a gas line.
Southside Fire and Savannah-Chatham Metro Police asked people to stay in their houses and avoid the area until the gas was turned off.
A brisk wind eliminated the need to evacuate houses, according to SCMPD.
"The main purpose of the fire department when we respond to a call like this is public safety. Number one, we want to secure the area. Number two, determine what kind of element or hazardous material is involved so we know what assets we need," said Brett Waters, Southside Fire Battalion Chief.
It took crews about two hours to get it fixed and neighborhood traffic flowing.
