A Vidalia woman has been arrested in connection with a man's death early Thursday morning.

Vidalia police were called a home at 12:28 a.m. Thursday at Fifth Avenue and Symonds Street on a welfare check. When officers arrived, they discovered 44-year-old Benjamin Herman Kelly deceased. Neighbors showed up just before police made the discovery.

"When the police pulled up, I look through the winder and I told the police there was a guy in there laying down. Benjamin Kelly. That is when they kicked the door in and he was laying face down. Just laying on his stomach with a lot of blood," said Shekema Channel, neighbor.

Rochelle Hurst, the girlfriend of the victim, was found walking down the street three blocks away from the scene and was arrested. She is being questioned.

"It is classified as a domestic dispute," said Vidalia Police Lead Investigator for the Criminal Division Sergeant Garrett Palmer. "We have not yet formally charged Hurst."

Investigators collected evidence inside and outside the home to determine what happened.

Vidalia Police Chief J. Frank Waits told WTOC that the investigtion is in its early stages.

Police had been called to the home several times for separate incidents.
