A shooting shut down part of Ogeechee Road near Chatham Parkway after police responded to the call of an officer down. An undercover police operation had led to a suspect being shot around 4pm at the Liberty Inn.
The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's Counter Narcotics Team was working under cover. When they approached a suspect in the parking lot of the inn, the man would not stop. Police shot the man, who drove off, possibly dragging an officer in the process.
Walter Simmons, a BellSouth utility worker nearby, head and saw the whole thing. "I was working in a cross box when I heard the shot," he told us. "I saw the man leaving with the door on his car wide open. The car evidently collided with someone or something."
"Luckily our police officer was fine, he was not struck or injured to my knowledge," said police spokesman Bucky Burnsed. "There is a possibility he may have been dragged a short distance by the suspect vehicle. However, the suspect was fired upon by the police officer"
Simmons says the shot startled him, but he figured out pretty quickly what was going on. "At first I thought it was a firecracker, but then I realized something was up when I saw the men running."
As of 6pm, Highway 17 was reopened. The suspect is at Memorial Health. His condition is not know.
