Reward increased in teen's fatal shooting case

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are asking for the public's help in the slaying of an 18-year-old high school student on April 19.

The Ardsley Park Chatham Crescent Neighborhood Association has provided more reward money to amount that's already offered by CrimeStoppers for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction. The reward is now up to $3,000.

Police are asking anyone to come forward if they know any information in the fatal shooting death of Donte Cleophus Swan, who was found dead at 8:20 p.m. found on East 54th Street. Police are focusing on the two hours before Swan was killed, which was about 6:20 p.m. on April 19.

Swan had left his father's window tinting and stereo shop on east DeRenne Avenue at about 6:20 p.m. April 19 in his bright blue 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, according to police. His car was found abandoned with the stereo and lights on at Maupus and Harmon streets a few minutes after the shooting.

Det. James Lyttle said that from all the information they have, Donte was a good kid; he wasn't involved in any criminal activity and went to school and work.

SCMPD's Violent Crimes detectives think the whereabouts of the car in those two hours could be instrumental in tying together other details already known in the case.

"The car was painted a distinctive shade of blue and stood out," said Capt. Dean Fagerstrom of the SCMPD Violent Crimes Division, in a statement. "In fact, it was located so quickly after the shooting because someone who recognized it as belonging to the victim called to report its location. It could be very helpful to us to know where it was before the shooting."

Residents on 54th Street reported hearing shots and two vehicles speeding away before finding Swan. They tried to provide first aid until police and emergency services arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police suspect the area where the body was found had no relation to the crime itself. The victim and shooter were passing through when the shooting occurred, according to police.

Those with information on the shooting can call CrimeStoppers at 912.234.2020 or text CRIMES (274637). Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for the cash reward.
