Chamber Holds Annual Armed Forces Appreciation Luncheon

Sgt. Marcus Davila enjoyed a meal fit for a general today at the Westin Riverfront Resort. A soldier of seven years, he says the Coastal Empire is like no other place for military hospitality. "You risk your life and at least somebody says thank you every five minutes," he said.

At its annual Armed Forces Appreciation luncheon, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce took time to thank the men and women of each military branch who protect and support the entire region.

"They have such an impact not only in our national security but an important economic impact in our area," said Bob Harman of  the chamber's Military Affairs Council. "They contribute so much."

The group honored one member of each local military branch of the Air National Guard, Army National Guard, Army, Marines, Coast Guard and Navy as well as the local USO. In turn, the Army honored Bob and Nancy Miller, who staffed nearly every USO sendoff for Third ID soldiers who deployed to Iraq.

"There's a community here that makes soldiers feel good," said assistant division commander Brig. Gen. Jose Riojas. "They welcome them when they come to the community. Civilians embrace them."

Organizers say they can't invite every service person in the area to this luncheon, but a nice meal and kind words are the least they can do.

Our own Bill Cathcart served as one of the emcees for today's luncheon. WTOC was proud to be one of the event sponsors.
