SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
A 2007 indictment against a man accused in the death of 12-year-old Ashleigh Moore has been dismissed.
Bobby Buckner is accused of strangling Ashleigh in 2003.
The 36-page ruling from Judge Penny Haas-Freesemann declared his Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial had been violated.
Family, friends, strangers and police searched for Ashleigh for more than a month before her body was found along the Savannah River near General MacIntosh Boulevard. Police targeted Buckner because he was the boyfriend of Ashleigh's mom, Michelle Moore. He also had served time for molesting at least three other girls.
A motion hearing was held in December 2011. Buckner's murder trial had been scheduled to begin next month. He remains in jail.
