Franklin Found Guilty in Second Trial

A man charged with murdering his father and stepmother in 1990 says he meant to kill himself instead. Christopher Franklin took the stand yesterday in Beaufort and said his father's shooting was an accident and he beat his stepmother to death out of fear.

The jury deliberated for more than 6 1/2 hours, and just before 11pm last night found the 29-year-old guilty of the murder of his stepmother, but not guilty in the death of his father.

During the first trial, Franklin was found guilty of two counts of murder and sentenced to two concurrent life sentences.

Franklin was 15 years old when he killed his father and stepmother at his home in Burton. He was granted another trial because he wasn't allowed to testify the first time. He'll be eligible for parole in 2010.
