SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Friday marks the 75th National Doughnuts Day.
To celebrate - folks lined up at Bakers Pride in Savannah to get their free donuts. No purchase is necessary. The tradition was started in Chicago by the Salvation Army to honor "doughnut lassies" who served the sweet snack o soldiers in World War II.
Workers at Bakers Pride said they're seeing more customers than usual on Friday.
"[It has been] very busy. It's not just the people asking about free donuts, but [they're] buying other stuff. We've been busy stocking the whole time," said Rodney Seabrook of Bakers Pride.
Donut shops across the country such as Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme are also participating in National Doughnut Day.
