Cleanup is underway in Appling County after some dangerous storms moved through the area Monday afternoon. Trees snapped leaving limbs and debris scattered everywhere, even on some power lines.
The winds were so strong it caused a large oak tree to fall on an apartment building on Fair St. The tree destroyed several units and part of the roof. Six families were displaced as a result of the damage.
"We heard some strong wind and when we came outside, we saw the tree on top of the roof," said Shaniquel Graham, resident.
Graham and her neighbors are now left to look for a new place to live. But the storm didn't just destroy the apartment building.
Keith Wiggins, who owns a hardware store directly behind the building, says the tree fell on a shelter where he stores bathtubs for sale.
"We probably lost $15,000 to $20,000," says Wiggins.
Wiggins says he will have to replace the bathtubs and rebuild the shelter. Graham and other residents are getting help from the American Red Cross including financial assistance, shelter, food and clothing.
