SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A man accused of stealing an ambulance Friday night in Savannah and leading police on a chase is expected in court on Monday.
Melvin Williams, 27, is charged with trying to take a deputy's gun, stealing an ambulance and leading officers on a low-speed chase across Chatham County.
It happened as Williams was being treated St. Joseph's Hospital, waiting to be transported to Georgia Regional.
Police said that Williams stepped out to smoke a cigarette. Williams took the ambulance through Savannah, Garden City and Port Wentworth before he was stopped, according to police.
