SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A man accused in Friday night's ambulance theft was denied bond in court Monday.
Melvin Williams, 27, is charged with trying to take a deputy's gun, stealing an ambulance and leading officers on a low-speed chase across Chatham County.
It happened as Williams was being treated St. Joseph's Hospital and waiting to be transported to Georgia Regional.
Police said that Williams stepped out to smoke a cigarette. Williams took the ambulance through Savannah, Garden City and Port Wentworth before he was stopped, according to police.
Williams was dragged into the courtroom screaming. He seemed confused, at one point telling the judge, "I can't hear the words."
