PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - Port Wentworth police officers will begin using technology that allows them to check drivers' licenses against the Georgia Crime Information and FBI/National Crime Information Center databases.
The software from ALEN Inc. allows officers to scan the barcode on the back of the driver's license. The police department will begin using the technology on Wednesday.
The software also checks whether the license is valid and whether or not the driver has any active warrants out on him or her, according to police. The data that comes up can then be transferred to a traffic citation, police report or accident report.
The scanner reads the license number and the state from where it was issued, which gives officers details about the person's driving history and whether or warrants have been issued.
Port Wentworth police plan to demonstrate the new technology to media outlets at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
