BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - Primary elections are being held throughout South Carolina Tuesday. The ballot includes a newly created House of Representatives seat for parts of Jasper and Beaufort counties and the House District 120 seat, for which Weston Newton and Jerry Stewart are both vying.
Newton and Stewart are both members of the Beaufort County Council and have similar views on many issues, including state vouchers for parents to send their kids to private or charter schools.
"If you give them less than what we spend on the public school kids, then it will be an incentive for people to send their kids to private schools. We save money and the kids get a good education," says Catherine Harlin, a voter and volunteer for the board of elections.
The House District 120 seat was created after redistricting plans were finalized in February. Other seats being contested in Beaufort County are the Republican primary for Beaufort County Clerk of Courts, District 1 of the Beaufort County Council, both Republican and Democrat, and the Democratic House Seat 122, which covers the northern part of Beaufort County, including Sheldon, Seabrook and portions of Burton.
