WASHINGTON (WTOC) -

The U.S. Army celebrates its founding 237 years ago on June 14. It was then that the Continental Army was formed.

This year's 237th Army Birthday theme is "America's Army:  The Strength Of The Nation.

During the American Revolution in 1775, the Continental Congress voted to adopt the Boston troops on June 14, although there is no written record of this decision, according to the U.S. Army website and the U.S. Army Center Of Military History.

The same day, Congress agreed to form a committee "to bring in a draft of rules and regulations for the government of the Army," and voted to allocate $2 million to support the forces around Boston and New York City.

Congress authorized the formation of 10 companies of expert riflemen who were commanded to march Boston to support the New England militia, according to the website.

On June 15, 1775, George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and took command at Boston on July 3, 1775.
