HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Americans celebrate Flag Day Thursday at ceremonies and services all over the country.

At a ceremony on Hilton Head Island, veterans put two flags out of service by burning them, in accordance with official flag etiquette. Patriots and of all ages lined Veterans Memorial Park at Shelter Cove to pay their respects to old glory.

While flag day is observed throughout the country at ceremonies like this, it is not an official federal holiday. It was established as a day of observance in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson and an act of congress for Flag Day was signed by President Truman in 1949.
