SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Bryan County deputy was killed early Friday morning during a head-on crash on Interstate 95 northbound near the GA 204 interchange.

It happened just after 2 a.m. Friday. A white Toyota Corolla driven by Patricia Ann Collins, 23, of Richmond Hill, was headed the wrong direction down I-95 north with her lights off and hit a Bryan County K-9 cruiser head on.

Another Bryan County deputy was following behind the other deputy when the crash occurred. He rushed in to help, but it was too late.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police spokeswoman Gena Sullivan said a Bryan County deputy was killed in the crash. The duputy's name has yet not been released, but WTOC has learned that the officer was headed home from work.

Units from Garden City, Pooler, Port Wentworth, Metro, Bryan County, and Georgia State Patrol worked the crash scene.

I-95 northbound reopened just before 6:30 a.m.
