SCMPD gets reports of police impersonators

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are looking into reports of people impersonating police officers.

A Savannah senior citizen told police that a man knocked on her door with a badge on his belt and asked her questions. She said that have the man had left, that she did not know what department he was with and that she couldn't read his badge, according to police.

Camden County authorities reported several cases of a man dressed in a uniform without a badge and in an unmarked car trying pull over cars and question drivers.

Sgt. Robert Vonloewenfeldt, of the SCMPD Central Precinct Investigations Unit, reminds residents that they have a right to:

  • Inspect an officer's badge
  • Ask for a supervisor to be called
  • Ask for time to call police to confirm the identity of anyone attempting to question them as a law enforcement officer

Vonloewenfeldt said that SCMPD protocol only marked police cars are allowed to stop cars for traffic offenses unless a dangerous situation exists, according to SCMPD.
