GSP: Man refuses to pull over in traffic stop

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A 21-year-old Savannah man is in custody in connection with a chase involving state troopers.

Police said Matthew Vasquez a Nighthawk DUI trooper tried to pull him on Interstate 16, near mile marker 165, late Thursday night.

Troopers said Vasquez exited onto Interstate 516 with a nighthawk in pursuit, ran a stoplight at Ogeechee Road, and finally crashed into a stop sign and a brick wall when he tried to turn onto 39th Street.

But that didn't stop Vasquez. Troopers said he ran from the wrecked vehicle. They tracked him down to a home on 39th Street, where he was hiding in a row of bushes.

He has been charged with drunken driving, fleeing, obstruction, probation violation and several traffic offenses.
