Automotive Education Program Helps Students

How did you get started in your career? Some youngsters had hands-on experience today as car dealers went to Effingham County High to set up a kind of internship program for students who want careers in automotive technology.

"The third year, we usually try to get them into an apprenticeship program, which is what AYES [Automotive Youth Educational Systems] is going to do for us," said teacher Keith Cornell. "It's going to put the students right into the dealers to start with, hopefully to eliminate the shortage of mechanics and well-trained mechanics we're experiencing right now."

The Effingham program is one of only four in Georgia. Automotive Youth Educational Systems sponsors it.
