Get emergency alerts on your cell phone

Posted: Updated:
CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Wireless Emergency Alerts, which are part of the national emergency alert system and includes the National Weather Service, are now being offered on wireless devices.

CEMA, will be able to tap into the system and send messages, but the service is provided through the federal government and cell phone service providers.

Text messages can be sent to your phone, but it will not count toward your text limits or data plans.

"This technology has the potential to save the lives of thousands of people  So many of us always have our cell phones no matter where we go. To be able to receive life-saving information directly on your cell phone is a step in a more storm ready community," said CEMA Director Clayton Scott in a press release.

Those interested should check with their phone carrier to see if their cell phone is WEA compatible.
