Girl charged with pickup truck theft, hit-and-run

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A 14-year-old Savannah girl has been charged in connection with stealing a pickup truck and hitting two pedestrians on Tuesday.

The teen turned herself in to police and was accompanied by her mom, according to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police.

At about 10:35 a.m. Tuesday, the teen got into a truck that had its keys in the ignition in the parking lot of the Pennysaver convenience store at Waters Avenue and 39th Street.

Police said the girl drove to Ott Street, where she swerved and hit Vickie White, 46, and Georgia Thomas, 68, who were talking on the side of the street. The girl then crashed the truck into a utility pole.

The teenager is charged with theft by taking (auto), reckless conduct, driving without a license, two counts of failure to report an accident with injuries and hit and run.

She has been transferred to the Youth Detention Center. SCMPD's Major Accident Investigation Team is continues to investigate. The girl could face more traffic charges.

White and Thomas were transported to Memorial University Medical Center. Thomas was treated for serious injuries. White was treated for minor injuries and released on Tuesday.
