Off-duty cop saves drowning girl

A 15-year-old girl from the Atlanta area nearly drowned on Tybee Island on Thursday evening.

It happened at about 7 p.m. People saw her struggling in the water and then go under. Luckily, an off-duty police officer from Macon was there and rushed to her rescue.

"I could hear her saying she was drowning. I went out and got the victim and got her to the beach and two young ladies identified themselves as nurses and did chess compressions," Macon Officer Tonnie Williams said.

Others came to help and two nurses managed to get the girl breathing again. An ambulance then rushed her to a hospital.

Tybee police say the girl was in town with a church group. Witnesses say they didn't see any counselors around while she was swimming. She is expected to be OK.

Police are not releasing her name until they can contact her family.
