New Development to Double Hardeeville Population

Five hundred new homes are in the making in Hardeeville, with community leaders on hand for the groundbreaking of an enormous new development. This is a huge amount of housing for middle-income families, needed not just by Hardeeville, but the entire region.

For a lot of cities, 534 new homes would be a big addition, but for Hardeeville, it's huge. "What I've been told is we will probably double the population of Hardeeville," developer Mark Lawson said.

Gateway Crossing is a brand new development going up inside the city limits, with three- to six-bedroom houses starting at $100,000. City leaders say it's a perfect community for the people Hardeeville is attracting. "A new hospital coming in, university coming on line, the public school system coming in as well as other developments coming in, that's going to need a workforce," noted Mayor Rodney Cannon.

Some people just can't wait to get started. This isn't one of those projects that's announced now but you don't see any work done until years down the road. Developers hope to have people living in Gateway Crossing as soon as possible.

"You'll see trees knocked down as of next week and infrastructure going in immediately after that," said Lawson. "You'll see homes probably start in 60 to 90 days and, depending on how fast we can build after that, I would say sometime this fall we'd have our first residents living in here."

People hoping to move into Hardeeville aren't the only ones looking forward to the new development. Existing employers can't wait. The school district's even planning on using the new housing as a recruiting tool for teachers.

Developers say they're hoping to have all 500 plus homes built and sold within five years, and think it might even happen sooner than that.
