Elementary Students Take Reading Challenge

It's a classroom challenge, and Gadsden Elementary students took it. Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority asked each grade level from kindergarten through the third grade to read 204 books. They far exceeded everyone's expectations and read more than a thousand.

Their principal, Dr. Delma Pollen, is scared to ride motorcycles, but she promised the students if they reached their goal, she would ride one.

"If a child can't read, a child is doomed to failure academically, socially and it's just so important at this early stage in kindergarten, first, second and third, that they not only learn to read, but to appreciate reading and learn to read comprehensively," said Alpha Kappa Alpha's Carolyn Bell.

Garrison Elementary School also participated in the challenge. They also exceeded their goal.
