Blood shortages across the country reach dangerous levels during the summer.
The annual Boots vs. Badges Blood Drive just wrapped up - collecting blood for the hospitals in Beaufort County through the Blood Alliance.
The blood drive is a friendly competition between police and fire departments in the Lowcountry - honoring men and women working for the departments.
Organizers said that although it's a friendly competition - it's an important event.
"Blood is a perishable. It can't be manufactured or produced so people are the ultimate resource. It doesn't last long. It only lasts 42 days, so it's a constant need of replenishment in the community," said Jessica Matthews, a donor resource consultant.
Those who donated on Monday got to vote for their favorite department. The winner will get a pizza party and bragging rights for the next year.
