New law requires metal recyclers to register

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Secondary metals recyclers in Chatham County must register each year with the Chatham County Sheriff's Office starting July 1.

The new state law requires each sheriff's office in the state to register secondary metals recyclers, keep a record of each registration and enter the registration information into a statewide data base searchable by all law enforcement agencies, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office. There is a $200 annual registration fee.

The new law that takes effect July 1 applies to secondary metals recyclers in Chatham County who bought regulated metal property. The law aims to curb metal thefts.

Get a copy of the Secondary Metals Recycler Registration form online at www.chathamsheriff.org under the "Enforcement" tab or by visiting the Chatham County Sheriff's Office at 1050 Carl Griffin Dr., Savannah, GA 31405.
