Soldiers from the War Between the States were remembered over the weekend. The Savannah chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated 21 newly discovered graves of Confederate soldiers Sunday in the Catholic Cemetery. Fourteen sites received new grave stones, but the other seven were placed together as a memorial for the soldiers whose gravesites are unknown.
The Catholic Cemetery Preservation Society discovered the names of the soldiers. "Well those would have been in the old church registers," explained Elizabeth Piechocinski, president of the Savannah chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. "And that's where we're finding the names and finding out who these men were. And that's how we knew they were buried here."
The UDC is in the process of compiling a complete list to give each soldier a new gravestone.
