Woman shot in face while driving on I-75

Atlanta police are trying to track down a man who shot a woman in the face as the two were traveling through the city early Friday.

According to Capt. Adam Lee, III, the woman was visiting Atlanta from Los Angeles to watch her 17-year-old son play in a baseball tournament. She and the boy's father had just rented a car at the airport. The woman was driving, and they were headed north on Interstate 75 at about 2:30 a.m.

They were approaching the Northside Drive exit, Lee said, when a man wearing a white T-shirt started firing at them.

"He basically leaned out of the vehicle, out of the passenger side window of the vehicle, and shot toward their vehicle as they were traveling north on the expressway," Lee said.

Police haven't been able to determine a motive.

"It's a very scary situation because we don't know what the problem was," Lee said. "The male passenger is saying there was no road rage involved. Nothing happened prior to the incident which would lead them to believe that they had cut anybody off. So at this point it appears to be just a random act of violence."

After the shooting, the woman managed to pull over. She and her son's father switched positions, and he drove, following the signs to Piedmont Hospital. The woman is expected to survive, Lee said.

The victims were unable to get a good description of the suspects or their vehicle.

"If anyone saw anything, please, I implore you to call 911," Lee said.
