Heat wave continues this weekend

Posted: Updated:

Temperatures and heat indices are expected to hit triple digits this weekend.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency warns residents to avoid spending long periods of time outdoors doing strenuous activity.

GEMA offered these tips for staying safe during periods of excessive heat:

  • Insulate your home by installing weather stripping around doors and window sills to keep the cool air inside.
  • Stay indoors in air-conditioning for as long as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
  • Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
  • Know the symptoms that can result from over-exposure to heat, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke to help lessen health threats and harm.
  • Avoid strenuous work during the hottest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat and take frequent breaks.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
  • Postpone outdoor activities and take shelter if severe weather is headed your way.
  • Keep pets in shade and give them plenty of water. Avoid over exercising them.
  • Conserve water and help prevent drought by washing full loads of dishes and laundry, fixing leaks around the house and installing low-flow toilets and showerheads.
  • Monitor severe weather updates with the NOAA Weather Radio or WTOC's weather app.
