Firefighter laid to rest, questions about murder remain

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of friends, family, and fellow firefighters said goodbye to 21 year old Wesley Franklin on Friday.

Franklin was killed early Monday morning in Sandfly at Deb's Lounge when an armed robber fired a gun in the parking lot. Police say the bullet went into the bar and hit Wesley. Witnesses say he was struck in the heart.

The funeral service was held Friday at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. Firefighters and first responders lined the sidwalk as a flag draped casket was carried to a firetruck.

A procession of hundreds of vehicles followed Franklin's remains to Forest Lawn Cemetary where he was laid to rest.

"I think the entire community is shaken because he was an outstanding individual and a kind human being," Southside Firefighter Mark Wallace said.

Franklin began working at Thunderbolt Fire when he was just fourteen years old. He then began volunteering at Isle of Hope Fire.

A reward of more than twenty thousand dollars is being offered for anyone with information leading to his killer.
