Change of Command at Parris Island

It's the place they make Marines, and yesterday Parris Island said goodbye to a commander. Brig. Gen. Joseph McMenamin handed over command of the recruit training depot to Col. John Valentin.

General McMenamin spent three years at Parris Island. "I'm excited about going to a new job," he said. "It's always great to keep your juices flowing, but we are sad because we met some good friends in the Low Country."

McMenamin's on his way to central command in Iraq to serve as the deputy commanding general of the Second Marine Expeditionary Force. Col. Valentin will run Parris Island until later this summer, when Brig. Gen. Richard Tryon takes the post.
