Historical Society to Take Over Saint Simon's Lighthouse

The lighthouse off the coast of Saint Simon's Island will now be cared for by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. This historic lighthouse is currently cared for by the Coast Guard. Today, secretary of the interior Gale Norton recommended the transfer of the lighthouse in a special ceremony.

For the past 25 years, the Historical Society has restored and maintained the buildings around the lighthouse. Now they'll be getting control of it and $2 million from the government to restore it.

The lighthouse will officially be handed over to the Historical Society in July.
